Great Wall of China: Nearly 30 Percent of UNESCO World Heritage Site Has Disappeared, Report Says

Large portions of the wall are gone because of natural conditions and human activity, such as brick theft, the Beijing Times reported Sunday. Estimates of its length now vary from 9,000 to 21,000 km. Around 30 percent of China's Ming-era Great Wall has disappeared over time as adverse natural conditions and reckless human activities -- including stealing the bricks to build houses -- erode the UNESCO World Heritage site, state media reported. The Great Wall is not a single unbroken structure but stretches for thousands of miles in sections, from Shanhaiguan on the east coast to Jiayuguan in the windswept sands on the edge of the Gobi desert. In places it is so dilapidated that estimates of its total length vary from 5,600 to 13,000 miles, depending on whether missing sections are included. Despite its length it is not, as is sometimes claimed, visible from space. Construction first begun in the third century BC, but nearly 4,000 miles were built in the Ming Dynasty of 1

Every great idea comes from a dream and all our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. This goes for everything in life, including start-ups and business ideas. They all start the same way but only some make it to the top. These posters by Anna Vital on Scuttlebutt and they will tell you what it takes to be on the top. Here's a crash course you'll find useful:  So, here's how these guys made it big: Feel motivated to start-up but unsure about where to start from? Here are some tips. If you hav

Three-day-old baby girl is found being eaten by ants after being abandoned in remote Russian woodland

A tiny three-day old baby was found covered in ant bites and crying in Russian woodland after being abandoned. Police are investigating after the badly-bitten newborn was discovered by a passer-by on the outskirts of Chelyabinsk in central Russia. The baby was unlikely to have survived much longer if she had not been found by the man, who had decided to take a shortcut on his way to work. A police spokesman said: 'The person that found the baby girl heard her crying and on investigating discovered the child lying on a pile of leaves and covered in ants. 'It was clear that the child had been abandoned and there was no one else in sight, so they picked her up and called for an ambulance.' The baby still had an umbilical cord attached when she was found by the man, who was on his way to work. After treatment for the bites, the baby is now stable and is expected to make a full recovery. She is being treated at a hospital in Chelyabinsk and police are trying to trac

Nutcase Couple Hang From Cliff 2700ft Above Rio

While most people get a little bit worried about heights when climbing up a ladder, Leonardo Edson Pereira, 23, and his girlfriend Victoria Medeiros Nader, 18, are very different. In fact, after seeing images of the couple hanging off a 2,700 ft cliff in Rio, Brazil, it’s safe to say the couple pretty much break the mould when it comes to heights and being daredevils. Pereira took his girlfriend with him on his latest thrill seeking adventure, with Pedra de Gavea their conquest this time. The images really are breathtaking and depict just one of the many times Pereira has climbed the Pedra de Gavea. He claimed: "I love living on the edge! I know people think it’s dangerous and crazy but it makes me feel alive,’ Leonardo says. It is really high and I do just hang on using my arm strength. I have to trust myself not to fall." The literal translation of the rock’s name means ‘Rock of the Topsail’, and while the images certainly are something, given

This has the effect of lengthening our days, but it happens so slowly that it could be as much as 140 million years before the l

Close-up Footage Of ISIS Gunman During Tunisian Terror Attack Emerges

Footage obtained by Sky News of the Tunisian terror attacks on Friday has emerged online and just might be the most comprehensive video to come out of it so far. The truly shocking footage, filmed by a Tunisian hotel worker, shows the ISIS gunman just metres away as he continues his killing spree through the holiday resort in Sousse. By the time the footage starts, Selfeddine Rezgui had already killed dozens of innocent people and had entered the beach area to look for more targets. The video conveys just how terrifying the situation must have been for all involved, and gives a first-hand insight into just what was happening on the ground. The horrific scene is laid out in front of you as the cameraman makes his way through sun loungers as bodies lie motionless on the floor. However, in an unbelievable turn of events, survivors and locals begin to turn on the gunman, and give chase down the beach as the coward flees. “Come on,” somebody shouts “He hasn't got the bal

Unmanned SpaceX Rocket Explodes Shortly After Launch

A SpaceX rocket carrying supplies to the International Space Station exploded shortly after lift-off in Florida this morning. According to NASA, the Falcon 9 rocket craft blew up only 139 seconds into the flight, after taking off from Cape Canaveral at 10.21am ET. Debris could be seen tumbling out of the sky and falling into the Atlantic Ocean. The rocket, which had 18 straight successes prior to today’s failed flight, was in the process of sending a cargo ship to the International Space Station. It reportedly had over two-and-a-half tons of supplies, equipment and experiments on board. This is the second failed attempt at docking with the ISS this year – after a Russian cargo ship span out of control in April – and NASA said there will be no further Falcon-9 launches in the immediate future. It’s not yet entirely clear how the disaster occurred but there are probably some pretty annoyed astronauts on the ISS right now! source

How India Changed My Life: It Is All About Experiences We Have

How India changed my life “In 2004, when I was at one of the lowest points of my life, I decided to go to India. I had never visited India; I’d never even been on a long-term trip. I was emotionally fragile, and at 45, I was at an age when more rational people would be thinking mostly about settling down and playing it safe. But I knew I had to go. I was trying to recover from a deeply entrenched depression brought on by a series of devastating losses, including both my parents, and the only thing that had helped was yoga. Three classes a week eventually turned into teacher training, which lead to a desire – a compulsion almost – to visit the country where yoga was born. It felt like my life depended on it. Though irrational and counter-intuitive, it’s still the best thing I have ever done. But it required some planning. I sold about one-third of my belongings, moved out of my apartment and into a small sublet, temporarily gave my cat to a friend and saved as much money as

The New Ant-Man Trailer Is Here, But It’s A Little Bit Spoilery

Marvel’s adaptation of Ant-Man is set to be one of the most anticipated films of the year, so it only makes sense that people are going mad for the latest leaks from press screenings and new trailers. That being said, most movie goers like a bit of mystery when going to the cinema – so it might be a good idea to steer clear of the latest trailer for the film, which stars Paul Rudd, because it gives away pretty much the entire plot in under two minutes. Great. The trailer is seriously spoilery, which might appeal to some people, but for me, this is one to avoid if you actually want to see the film. So basically if you don’t want to pay to go to the cinema or can’t actually be bothered to sit through the entire film, just watch this because it does the job for you. Seriously.

To Avoid Gay Marriage Parts Of Alabama Have Actually Banned Weddings Altogether

Yesterday, the U.S Supreme Court voted to legalise same-sex marriage nationwide and some people in the country really aren't taking it well. In a bizarre and petty protest, at least three counties in the southern state of Alabama have decided to stop issuing marriage licenses altogether. Geneva County probate judge Fred Hamic said under Alabama law he had the right to refuse to issue marriage licences. In a statement to the Dothan Eagle, Hamic said: "Section 30-1-9 of the Alabama Code of 1975 says a probate judge may issue a marriage licence. It doesn't say a probate judge has to issue a marriage licence. I will not be doing any more ceremonies." Meanwhile, Pike County probate judge Wes Allen stopped issuing licences to both gay and straight couples back in February as a means of preventing same-sex marriage. Speaking to AP about how “saddened” he was by the Supreme Court’s decision, Allen said: "My office discontinued issuing marriage licen

Gay Marriage Is Now Legal Across The United States

Same sex marriage has been legalised throughout the USA after a Supreme Court ruling saw a 5-4 majority vote in favour of the union. The basic right has been afforded to all Americans, with more than 70% of Americans actually living in areas where gay couples could marry before the ruling, with the liberty being afforded by 36 states – and now after the landmark ruling, the right will be there for all to take advantage of. Justice Kennedy claimed:            " It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right." For my money, this has been a long time coming, and despite those who oppose it claim

NASA Explains Why June 30 Will Get Extra Second

The day will officially be a bit longer than usual on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, because an extra second, or “leap” second, will be added. “Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing down a bit, so leap seconds are a way to account for that,” said Daniel MacMillan of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Strictly speaking, a day lasts 86,400 seconds. That is the case, according to the time standard that people use in their daily lives – Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. UTC is “atomic time” – the duration of one second is based on extremely predictable electromagnetic transitions in atoms of cesium. These transitions are so reliable that the cesium clock is accurate to one second in 1,400,000 years. However, the mean solar day – the average length of a day, based on how long it takes Earth to rotate – is about 86,400.002 seconds long. That’s because Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing down a bit, due to a kind of braking force caused by the gravitational tug of

10 Unique Facts About Oceans That You Didn’t Know

Ocean makes up 70% of the earth and still we are unaware about some unique facts about ocean. We have found ocean is a mysterious place which is not explored completely till now, so many of the questions are unanswered. Let’s brush up some knowledge about Earth’s Ocean. 1. Fifty percent of United States lies below the ocean. ( on a rough count) 2. Sunlight does not reach the ocean beds; hence most of the ocean are dark, black and chilled out. 3. If you travel through waterways, it will take 1000 years to take a globe tour. 4. Pacific ocean alone contains largest islands which covers 30% of earth’s surface 5. About 75 percent of oxygen comes from ocean and is produced by a microscopic animal called phytoplankton 6. Till now only three lakh under water species are identified out of a total of 3 million species.                                           7. That means we have explored only 1% of animal species and rest remains unexplored. 8. A lost ci
