Same sex marriage has been legalised throughout the USA after a Supreme Court ruling saw a 5-4 majority vote in favour of the union.
The basic right has been afforded to all Americans, with more than 70% of Americans actually living in areas where gay couples could marry before the ruling, with the liberty being afforded by 36 states – and now after the landmark ruling, the right will be there for all to take advantage of.
Justice Kennedy claimed:
"It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.
Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
For my money, this has been a long time coming, and despite those who oppose it claiming the ruling is a bad thing, no one should be denied to marry who they love because of sexual orientation.source
