Three-day-old baby girl is found being eaten by ants after being abandoned in remote Russian woodland
A tiny three-day old baby was found covered in ant bites and crying in Russian woodland after being abandoned.
Police are investigating after the badly-bitten newborn was discovered by a passer-by on the outskirts of Chelyabinsk in central Russia.
The baby was unlikely to have survived much longer if she had not been found by the man, who had decided to take a shortcut on his way to work.
A police spokesman said: 'The person that found the baby girl heard her crying and on investigating discovered the child lying on a pile of leaves and covered in ants.
'It was clear that the child had been abandoned and there was no one else in sight, so they picked her up and called for an ambulance.'
The baby still had an umbilical cord attached when she was found by the man, who was on his way to work.
After treatment for the bites, the baby is now stable and is expected to make a full recovery.
She is being treated at a hospital in Chelyabinsk and police are trying to track down her parents.
