Google To Blanket New York With Free Wi-Fi, Then Hopefully The World

Google are about to kill it, providing this new idea actually works. Not only are they the answer to every question you might have and put Jeeves to shame on a daily basis, but they have now decided to bring free Wi-Fi to everyone – well, in New York initially at least, and have even set up a specific company, Sidewalk Labs, to make it happen. They plan to do this by using old phone booths, with 10,000 throughout the city marked out for conversion, and in true Google style, they don’t plan on stopping there. The old phone booths, that will be converted into pylons to support the Wi-Fi throughout the city will eventually not only be used for internet access but also for phone charging, free domestic phone calls, and a touchscreen for finding city info and transit directions. And there are plans to launch in other cities as well, with Bloomberg claiming the pylons are set to be rolled out across New York first. Hurry up and bring it overseas. Please!

Using NASA Data to Show How Raindrops Could Save Rupees

Rainwater could save people in India a bucket of money, according to a new study by scientists looking at NASA satellite data. The study, partially funded by NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Missions, found that collecting rainwater for vegetable irrigation could reduce water bills, increase caloric intake and even provide a second source of income for people in India. The study, published in the June issue of Urban Water Journal, is based on precipitation data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), a joint mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, which provided observations of rainfall over the tropics and subtropics from 1997 to 2015. "India has severe problems getting potable water to all of its residents," said Dan Stout, research assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Utah and one of three authors of the study. "We considered collecting water in a relatively small tank, and it’s amazing the ...

Manipal University Students Design Solar Powered Car

The two-seater car weighs 590 kg and can reach a speed of 60kph. As levels of air pollution rise, 27 students of the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka, India have developed a solar-powered car called SERve or the Solar Electric Road Vehicle to encourage people to go green. The students hope to make the two-seater car that weighs 590 kg and can reach a speed of 60kmph, commercially viable. "There are not many solar cars present in the world right now. This, I think, is one of the three solar cars, passenger solar cars which are there in the world. The thing is we have tried to optimize the total cost of the manufacturing of the project. So, we've done it within Rs. 25 lakh (US $40,000) . We consider that as an achievement," Jeet Bannerjee, leader of the team of students. The students received help from Tata Power Solar which provided the solar panels for this initiative. The solar panel is curved to fit the car's surface and its ...

14 Of Adolf Hitler’s Paintings Just Sold For £285,000 At Auction

A set of 14 paintings, watercolours and drawings done by Adolf Hitler fetched a whopping €400,000 (£285,000 / $450,000) at auction in Germany over the weekend. The works went under the hammer at the Weilder auction house in Nuremberg, with the most expensive item (a painting of King Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle) fetching €100,000 from a buyer in China. Meanwhile, an unspectacular floral still life sold for €73,000. The Nazi dictator initially wanted to become an artist, and applied to the Vienna Academy of Art but was rejected. After that he sold paintings to tourists which he'd copied from postcards and then went into politics, unfortunately. The unidentified buyers of the works, signed ‘A. Hitler’, came from all over the world, including Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, France and Germany. Speaking to DPA, Kathrin Weidler of the auction house said: "These collectors are not specialised in works by this particular painter but rather have a general inter...

Using tons and tons of data (over 11 terabytes) NASA’s teams have conducted studies in order to craft a prediction of what the world will feel like by the year 2100. And the results are more than shocking. The scientists have predicted that by 2100 the carbon dioxide levels, which can be found in the planet Earth’s atmosphere, will reach nearly 935ppm. In comparison, nowadays the carbon dioxide levels are 400ppm. In other words, the carbon dioxide today represents around 0.04% of our atmosphere, while by 2100 it will rise up to 0.1%....

Doctors have made a discovery that will have young people in disarray all over the world. Skinny jeans are bad for you. But not only do they look awful, especially with your bare ankles, but they are actually damaging your legs. That’s right, by wearing skinny jeans you are increasing the chance of developing ‘Compartment Syndrome’. Compartment Syndrome is essentially an increase in pressure in the body’s compartments.
