South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has called for Dylann Roof to face the death penalty after he reportedly admitted to shooting dead nine people in a Charleston church.
According to reports, Roof reportedly admitted to officials that he “wanted to start a race war”.
In an interview on NBC’s Today show, Governor Haley said: “This is a state hurt by the fact that nine people innocently were killed. We will absolutely want him to have the death penalty.”
Currently, the charges he faces are unknown, but US attorney general, Loretta Lynch, said her office was investigating whether to charge him with a hate crime motivated by racial or other prejudice.
A former roommate of Roof, who has appeared in interviews on various news channels since the incident, described how Roof had told him that “blacks were taking over the world” and “someone needed to do something about it for the white race.”
Whether he receives the death penalty or not, one thing is for sure, he will never be a free man.source
