India launches its first astronomy satellite, ASTROSAT, into orbit

India has sent its first ever observational space telescope, called ASTROSAT, into orbit, after a successful launch from the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C30) rocket. From its low-Earth orbit altitude of approximately 650 km, ASTROSAT’s mission is to help astronomers develop a more detailed understanding of the Universe. The satellite, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a multi-wavelength space observatory effectively designed to be India’s answer to NASA’s Hubble telescope. According to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), which helped develop many of the optical instruments onboard the spacecraft, ASTROSAT features “unprecedented capability” to simultaneously observe cosmic objects in visible light, the ultraviolet waveband and the x-ray waveband, from very low-energy through to very high-energy x-rays. “ASTROSAT is a quantum leap from previous modest-sized payloads on other Indian satellites,” said Prahlad Agrawal, a profe

Here’s What We Learned From NASA’s Major Mars Announcement

Has NASA found life on Mars? Well, in short, no. But the discovery they have made could point to the possibility of there being life, maybe. So that’s something, right? In a press conference today, NASA scientists confirmed they have found evidence of flowing water on the surface of Mars. NASA said last week that they had made a “major science finding” on the Red Planet, claiming that a “mystery had been solved”. The historic finding is that liquid, briny water runs down canyons and crater walls on Mars during the summer months. It then dries up in the autumn and winter months, leaving long, dark stains on the Martian terrain, which were spotted by scientists. Those streaks point to the existence of flowing water, as confirmed today by NASA scientists in the journal Nature Geoscience. Tim O’Brien, Professor of astrophysics at The University of Manchester, said: All life as we know it needs water, now we have found water on Mars there could be life. They have foun

Baby Born With Most Of His Skull Missing Celebrates His First Birthday

Doctors predicted that Jackson Emmett Buell would only live for a few days when he was born in Florida, U.S.A. He has just celebrated his first birthday. Jaxon, whose nickname is Jaxon Strong, was born with an extreme birth defect called Microhydranencephaly, where the brain and skull don’t form properly. It is estimated that about one in 4,859 babies are born with this rare condition in America, but most die in the womb or shortly after birth. “We did everything we could to give him a fighting chance and all he’s done since being born is fight right back,” Jaxon’s dad, Brandon Buell, said. Brittany Buell, 27, said she was devastated at the thought her son wouldn’t survive. “It was heart breaking because something I always wanted my whole life was happening, but then I was told there was a possibility it might be a stillborn,” she said. Brandon and Brittany were given the option to terminate the pregnancy at 23 weeks. They refused. Jaxon survived the pregnancy and sp

The Awesomeness Of The Super Blood Moon

In certain parts of the world last night you may have had the opportunity to see the rare super blood moon during a lunar eclipse. The blood-red-super-moon-lunar-eclipse is a result of the moon being at its closest point of its orbit to the Earth. It won’t reach this position again until 2033. It gets 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. The dark red effect is caused because the Earth is fully in the way of the light between the sun and the moon. NASA also reckons “it’s caused by particles in our atmosphere; when there have been a lot of fires and/or volcanic eruptions, lunar eclipses will appear darker and redder.” Hope you managed to have a cheeky look with the naked eye! If not, no worries, here are some shit hot photos. He Was 16 When Nagasaki Was Bombed; These Photos Of Nagasaki Survivor Will Shock You To Your Very Core.

Sumiteru Taniguchi is one of Nagasaki Survivor and he was only sixteen when Nagasaki was bombed on the 9th of August, 1945. It has been 70 years since the world-altering tragedy, but Taniguchi lives with its dreaded memory even today. This Nagasaki survivor’s body is covered with wounds that hurt to this day, in spite of the cream that his wife applies every day to soothe the pain and bring relief to the scars that still burn. These scars are visible almost everywhere – his frail body has dents in several places, and a conspicuous swelling covers his chest. The remains of three of his ribs, now half rotten, press into his lungs, making it difficult for him to breathe. And it has been 70 years since Taniguchi straightened his left arm, simply because he couldn’t. At the moment that the “Fat Man” bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on the 9th of August, 1945, Taniguchi was about 1.8 km from the epicenter; the blast threw him off his bicycle. Taniguchi says that he spent the next

How To Prevent Your Computer From Overheating

An overheating computer spells trouble. You would want your girlfriend to be smoking hot but trust me, neither you want your computer to be smoking, nor hot. Yes, we are talking about computer overheating problem. The cooling system of the computer comprising of the fan, heat sinks, vents etc. forms one of the most essential components of your device. A malfunctioning one can cause heat to build up inside, thereby damaging and slowly eating up the life of sensitive components such as the motherboard. These days everyone is having overheating problems with their systems, and asking for solutions. Besides shortening the lifespan, overheating also causes your PC to slow down and since in the world of computing, the slow and steady only ends up cursing at the screen and raising his hands in utter dismay, I am pretty much sure that you would be keen to avoid that. Huge Discovery As ‘New Species Of Human’ Found In South Africa

A reconstruction of Homo naledi’s head by paleoartist John Gurche, who spent some 700 hours recreating the head from bone scans. University of the Witwatersrand, National Geographic Society and the South African National Research Foundation. A new discovery in South Africa has profound implications for everything we know about human heritage, apparently. Scientists from the University of Witwatersrand, in collaboration with National Geographic, have allegedly discovered a new species of human. The Homo naledi. Remains of the species were found accidentally by amateur cavers two years ago. An expedition then set out to recover the skeletons, expecting to find a single one they were surprised when they uncovered 15 individuals. And this species seem to display a behaviour long believed to be unique to modern humans – burying their dead in an isolated chamber. The fossils were found in a dark, isolated cave that is extremely difficult to access. After ruling out all other p

This Cartoon Succinctly Explains The Background To The Syrian Conflict

The Syrian refugee crisis has been dominating the news cycle in recent weeks and, understandably so, considering that it’s Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War. The shocking photograph of Aylan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkey beach made many wake up to the horrifying reality of the crisis but, although most of us now know that millions of people have been displaced from their homes in the nation to escape civil war and persecution, there are many who may not actually understand what is happening over in Syria. That’s why this helpful cartoon has been produced in an attempt to try and help people understand the situation in the country and how and why it has happened and escalated to such an extent. And the major information about climate change, politics and the instability of the region all imply that the events in Syria and across Europe are part of a larger story which affects us all. 92 Year Old Woman Finally Gives Birth to her 60 Year Old Baby

Huang Yijun, 92 of Southern China recently delivered a baby that she had been carrying for over half a century. The baby which died in Huang’s womb 60 years ago was in fact a lithopedion or “stone baby”. This rare phenomenon occurs when a pregnancy fails and the fetus remains intact in the mother’s uterus and calcifies. A lithopedion originally starts off as an ectopic pregnancy. Dr. Natalie Burger, an endocrinologist and fertility specialist at the Texas Fertility Center states “Usually an ectopic pregnancy will mean a [fallopian] tubal pregnancy, but in a small percentage of cases, the pregnancy can actually occur in the abdominal cavity — in places like the bowel, the ovary, or even on the aorta,” she says. “These are very rare locations and they can be very dangerous.” In these instances, either a termination is recommended due to the possible risks to the mother; or the fetus will simply die on its own due to a lack of blood supply. Once the fetus dies, the tissue breaks d

Photos Of This Drowned Syrian Kid Dying While Escaping War Will Melt Even The Stone Hearts

The heart breaking image of a Syrian child lying dead on the shore of Turkish beach with his face down has not only ashamed the humanity but has also questioned the intention of International community whether they really want to solve the migrant crisis of that area or just showing off. The child is said to be the part of 11 member group who were attempting to get into Greece by travelling through Mediterranean sea as they wanted to leave war-ridden Syria. The boy was wearing a red T-shirt and blue shorts, his name is said to be Aylan Kurdi and he belonged to Kobane, a Kurdish Syrian city, his elder brother Galip was found dead on the other part of the beach. The British newspaper Independent wrote, “If these extraordinarily powerful images of a dead Syrian child washed up on a beach don’t change Europe’s attitude to refugees, what will?” It is absolutely clear that the level of cruelty and harassment is Syria is so high that people are ready to take even this type of dangerous
